Biography
Korean girl group CLC infuse their rhythm-driven K-pop tracks with sharp attitude and a bold edge, favoring lively dance rhythms over tender ballads. As Cube Entertainment’s second all-female act, the seven-member lineup made their entrance in the first months of 2015 via the mini-album First Love. A rapid succession of further EPs through the close of the decade anchored the act inside Korea’s Top 20 until the 2017 American arrival of Crystyle broadened their global reach. Their eighth Korean mini-album, No.1, delivered a career summit on both domestic and U.S. charts in 2019.
Formed initially as a five-piece that briefly backed Canadian-born Korean vocalist G.NA, the original roster featured leader Seungyeon alongside Seunghee, Yujin, Yeeun, and Thai member Sorn. Their opening EP, First Love, surfaced in March 2015 and was trailed two months later by Question. Early 2016 brought the addition of Eunbin and Hong Kong native Elkie; the expanded septet’s inaugural release, Refresh, marked the change. Later that year their first Japanese outing, High Heels, appeared and incorporated a rendition of Kylie Minogue’s 1987 single “I Should Be So Lucky.” Returning to the Korean market, Nu.Clear dropped that May and a second Japanese EP, Chamisma, followed in July.
The 2017 set Crystyle steered the group toward a harder sound and featured the HyunA-assisted EDM-trap cut “Hobgoblin.” The project notched the act’s first U.S. chart entry at number six on the World Albums tally, while “Hobgoblin” reached number four on the World Songs chart. Later that summer Free’sm surfaced, an R&B-inflected nod to predecessors Fin.K.L and S.E.S. A single 2018 release, Black Dress, kept activity modest until the following year, when the eighth Korean EP No.1 achieved the group’s strongest showing. The “No”-led collection climbed to the Top Five in Korea and on the U.S. World Albums list while also registering on Billboard’s Indie and Heatseekers rankings.
