Biography
Blurring boundaries between the digital and physical realms, South Korean quartet Aespa fused its four flesh-and-blood performers with matching virtual counterparts to craft an immersive sound positioned between K/DA and BlackPink. SM Entertainment introduced the act in 2020 as its first girl group since Red Velvet; the ensemble launched that November with the single “Black Mamba” and followed the next year with debut EP Savage. A second chart-topping EP, Girls, reached listeners in 2022, while both My World and Drama arrived in 2023. The full-length Armageddon, the group’s expansive studio debut, surfaced in 2024.
Months before the members surfaced, SM Entertainment floated the notion of an avatar-driven pop project—the “a” and “e” in Aespa—before officially presenting the lineup in October 2020. Karina (vocalist, rapper, and dancer Yoo Ji-min), Giselle (rapper and vocalist Uchinaga Eri), Winter (vocalist and dancer Kim Min-jeong), and Ningning (vocalist Ning Yi Zhuo) constitute the human roster, each paired with an “ae-” prefixed digital twin. The first musical glimpse arrived in November via the explosive dance-pop track “Black Mamba.” In 2021 the ensemble delivered its initial mini-album, Savage, led by the high-energy title song. A Warner Records partnership followed in 2022, coinciding with sophomore EP Girls. Powered by “Life’s Too Short,” the project topped the South Korean album chart and reached number three on the Billboard 200; it also contained “Dreams Come True,” which reworked S.E.S.’s late-’90s K-pop staple of the same name.
Extending the momentum of Girls, Aespa issued third EP My World in May 2023. The concise collection ventured further with electro-tinged “Spicy” and “Salty & Sweet,” plus the sweeping opener “Welcome to My World” featuring backing vocals from SMCU’s Naevis. Later that year the group returned with Drama, highlighted by its commanding title track and the English-language single “Better Things.” Armageddon, the quartet’s first complete album, earned praise upon release in 2024 and settled at number two on the Korean albums chart.
