Korean quartet Mamamoo entered the scene in the early 2010s, drawing from the sounds of '90s R&B girl groups as well as the retro-modern K-pop of Wonder Girls. Under the RBW (Rainbow Bridge World) label, the group released their first project, Hello, in 2014 and later reached both the Korean and U.S. charts with their initial full-length album, 2016's Melting.

The lineup features vocalists Solar (Kim Yong-sun) and Wheein Jung alongside rappers Moon Byul-yi and Hwasa (Ahn Hye-jin). Their early work incorporated guest appearances from Bumkey, K.Will, and Geeks, all of which appeared on the 2014 debut. Hello also showcased the jazzy title track and the retro-funky single "Mr. Ambiguous." The Piano Man EP came next, followed by Pink Funky in 2015. Melting, their first proper studio LP, surfaced in 2016 and climbed to number two in Korea while landing in the Top Ten on the U.S. World Albums chart. The set featured the singles "I Miss You" and "You're the Best," the latter marking the group's inaugural Korean number one. A subsequent split single spotlighted the vocal duo on "Angel" and the rap pair on "DAB DAB," with both tracks later included on the Memory EP.

The 2017 Purple EP leaned into electronic production and a dance-funk approach. Anchored by "Yes I Am," it became Mamamoo's strongest commercial showing to that point, topping the U.S. World Albums chart and reaching number two in Korea. The following year brought Yellow Flower, the opening chapter of a four-part series shaped by the seasons, colors, natural elements, and each member's individual persona, which delivered another Korean chart-topper. Months afterward came the second installment, Red Moon, containing the Sia-esque single "Egotistic." That release marked the quartet's first appearance on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, where it peaked at number 25. Also in 2018, Mamamoo ventured into a new territory by re-recording the Memory track "Decalcomanie" in Japanese. Their second full-length album, Reality in Black, arrived in November 2019.
