South Korean girl group AOA specializes in R&B-infused pop sounds. With side projects AOA Black, AOA White, and AOA Cream alongside them, the central five members lean into the gentler end of K-pop by emphasizing both ballads and energetic dance numbers. They entered the scene in the middle of the 2010s via the Japanese album Ace of Angels and reached their commercial high point in 2017 when their debut Korean full-length, Angel's Knock, climbed to the Top Five on both the domestic chart and Billboard's World listing.

FNC Entertainment assembled the act in 2012 under the name Ace of Angels. The original eight-piece lineup featured Jimin Shin, Yuna Seo, Chanmi Kim, Hyejeong Shin, Seol-hyun Kim, Mina Kwon, Youkyung Seo, and Choa Park. Their opening mini-album Angel's Story included the track "Elvis" and landed inside the Korean Top Ten. The follow-up Wanna Be EP arrived with "Get Out" as its lead cut. Late that year the company spun off AOA Black, drawing members Youkyung, Jimin, Yuna, Choa, and Mina; the subunit issued the single "Moya" in 2013 while the main roster put out the two-song Red Motion EP.

"Miniskirt," released in early 2014, became their biggest hit up to that point. Later that summer Short Hair pushed the group further into the Korean Top Five. Like a Cat closed the year and marked AOA's first appearance on a U.S. chart. A Japanese edition surfaced in early 2015, sparking success on that country's charts and prompting a Korean reality program. During the same summer the members performed in Los Angeles and New York, marking their initial shows on American soil. The Heart Attack EP yielded the title track, which reached number two in Korea and became their second song to register on Billboard.

In 2016 the trio of Chanmi, Hyejeong, and Yuna formed the new subgroup AOA Cream. The main group's fourth mini-album Good Luck appeared that summer, several months before Youkyung exited. Angel's Knock arrived the next year and secured Top Five placements on both the Korean and Billboard World charts; the project also served as Choa's final release with the band before her departure that summer. The 2018 EP Bingle Bangle kept the remaining members active.

Mina left the group in April 2019. Several months later New Moon became their sixth mini-album and sixth straight Top Three Korean-chart entry. By 2020 the roster had dwindled to a quartet after leader Jimin Shin withdrew from both AOA and the entertainment industry altogether.
