Drawing from the bold individual traits of its members, the dynamic five-member K-pop act (G)I-DLE made their entrance in 2018 by challenging conventional K-pop conventions. Their first mini-album, I Am, arrived that May and led directly to an invitation to join the virtual supergroup K/DA, where Miyeon and Soyeon contributed vocals; the resulting single “Pop/Stars” accumulated more than 500 million streams globally. Steady Top Ten placements and multiple award-show sweeps followed, establishing the quintet as one of the genre’s most promising acts. Their first full-length project, I Never Die, repeated that chart success in 2022 on both the South Korean and Billboard rankings. Subsequent Top Ten EPs—I Love later that year, I Feel in 2023, and Heat—continued the pattern.

Cube Entertainment assembled the lineup of Soyeon, Minnie, Miyeon, Yuqi, Soojin, and Shuhua early in 2018, building the project around rapper-singer Soyeon after she had already begun her solo career. The agency first considered the name Idle, taken from Soyeon’s track “Idle Song,” before adopting the plural feminine form (G)I-DLE to underscore each member’s distinct artistic voice and the group’s rejection of standard girl-group archetypes. The final roster was unveiled at a widely viewed busking performance in Seoul, after which the group debuted with I Am. Blending trap, disco, and other styles while anchoring everything to catchy choruses and tight group interplay, the EP entered the South Korean chart at number 13 and earned immediate music-show victories on SBS MTV’s The Show and Mnet’s M Countdown.

International recognition arrived through an unexpected avenue when the members joined K/DA, the League of Legends–inspired digital collective. Their contributions helped “Pop/Stars” dominate streaming platforms outside Korea, prompting festival appearances, convention showcases, and a sweep of year-end honors that included the Golden Disc Awards, Asia Artist Awards, and Melon Music Awards.

The year 2019 brought further expansion. February’s second mini-album, I Made, explored fresh sonic territory; the lead single “Senorita” incorporated urbano and funk elements, while “Put It Straight” was released in a chilling “Nightmare Version.” In July the group issued its third EP, Latata, through Universal Music Japan, marking their first Japanese-language release with reworked versions of “Maze” and “Latata” alongside two new tracks. An appearance on the Queendom competition show closed the year; although they finished third, the accompanying single “Lion”—later included on the Queendom Final Comeback compilation—became their fifth Top Ten hit and reappeared on the 2020 EP I Trust. That project also featured “Oh My God,” secured the group’s first number-one position on the South Korean chart, and marked their highest placement to date on the U.S. World chart. Capitalizing on growing overseas interest, they released an English-language version of “Latata,” followed by the singles “Dumdi Dumdi” and the Latin-inflected “I’m the Trend.” Their fourth Korean EP, I Burn, arrived in 2021; several months later Soojin departed, leaving the act as a five-piece.

The reduced lineup issued its first studio album, I Never Die, in 2022. The platinum-certified set reached number two in South Korea and number 13 on the U.S. World Albums chart. Later that year the fifth Korean mini-album, I Love, delivered the hit “Nxde.” Another chart-topping release, I Feel, followed in 2023 with the single “Queencard.” That same year the group partnered with 88rising for their first all-English project, the Heat EP, which included the tracks “I Do” and “I Want That.”
