South Korean girl group Girls' Generation emerged in the late 2000s and early 2010s as one of K-pop’s most globally embraced acts, riding the first major wave of international interest in the genre. Their 2009 single “Gee” ignited a rapid climb across worldwide charts, delivering multiple number one hits in Korea and consistent appearances on the U.S. World singles chart through million-selling dance-pop releases such as “The Boys,” “Oh!,” “Mr. Taxi,” and “I Got a Boy.” Korean-language albums Oh! (2010), I Got a Boy (2013), and Lion Heart (2015) each reached the summit of both Korean and U.S. charts, while their Japanese breakthrough produced the 2011 album Girls' Generation and 2013’s Love & Peace. Following the 2017 release of their ninth LP, Holiday Night, the group entered an indefinite hiatus, yet their sound and impact continued to shape the next generation of K-pop acts. Marking their 15th anniversary, they returned in August 2022 with the seventh album Forever 1.

Known also as SNSD (So Nyeo Shi Dae), the nine-member outfit was introduced in summer 2007 by SM Entertainment alongside the label’s all-boy group Super Junior. The original lineup—Hyoyeon, Jessica, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Yoona, and Yuri—had each already appeared in Korean pop media prior to joining Girls' Generation. Their debut single “Into the New World” arrived that August, followed by the self-titled album Girls' Generation in November. Throughout 2008 the members made frequent television appearances to promote the record and its singles. With the 2010 release of Oh!, the group extended its activities to Japan and, the following year, targeted the American market via The Boys. In April 2012, Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun formed the sub-unit Girls Generation TTS (TaeTiSeo) and issued its first single, “Twinkle.”

Girls' Generation’s sixth album, I Got a Boy, arrived in January 2013, selling more than 265,000 copies in its opening month and topping Billboard’s World Albums Chart. That year the group toured Japan and Korea, released the live album Girls' Generation Tour, and received the Best Music Video award at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards. December brought the Japanese-language album Love & Peace, which, together with the 2011 self-titled Japanese debut, made Girls' Generation the first Korean girl group to place two albums at number one on the weekly Oricon chart.

The mini-album Mr. Mr., featuring production by Underdogs, was released in February 2014. Later that year the group announced Jessica’s departure due to scheduling conflicts and continued as an eight-member ensemble. Their fifth full-length album, Lion Heart, followed in 2015; it became their second consecutive release to top both the Korean and U.S. World charts and contained the international singles “Party” and “Lion Heart.”

After a largely inactive 2016, Girls' Generation marked its tenth anniversary with the 2017 album Holiday Night, securing a third straight number one on the U.S. World Albums chart. SM Entertainment subsequently placed the group on indefinite hiatus so members could focus on solo projects. Four years later the members reunited for a Korean television appearance, and in 2022 the label confirmed an official comeback to celebrate the group’s 15th anniversary. The single “Forever 1” premiered in early August, with the tenth studio album of the same name arriving the same week. Retaining their signature anthemic pop style, Forever 1 resonated as a nostalgic favorite among longtime K-pop listeners.
