Under the guidance of Park Jin-Young at JYP Entertainment, the Wonder Girls emerged as a South Korean girl pop group whose popularity was repeatedly tested by misfortune. Their initial television performance on a Korean pop music program occurred in February 2007, just days before the mini-album The Wonder Begins appeared. Multiple setbacks soon followed and jeopardized momentum toward a full-length debut: Ahn So Hee sustained an injury in a video-shoot accident, Kim Hyun A was withdrawn by her parents over health worries and replaced by Kim Yoo Bin, and the full group suffered injuries in a van crash after a live date.

By September 2007 the band could finally issue its first studio album, The Wonder Years. The lead single "Tell Me" achieved strong success, prompting visits to China and the United States. In 2009 the remix-and-new-material EP The Wonder Years: Trilogy surfaced, after which the group embarked on a world tour captured in the Internet reality series Welcome to Wonderland. That same year an English-language take on "Nobody" was released, and the members supported the Jonas Brothers on an American trek. School schedules and other commitments triggered further roster adjustments throughout 2009, so that the 2010 North American tour featured Sun (Min Sun Ye), Yenny (Park Ye Eun), Sohee (Ahn So Hee), Yubin (Kim Yoo Bin), and Lim (Woo Hye Lim). This configuration delivered the album Wonder World in 2011 and the EP Wonder Party in 2012.
