Biography
EXO, the South Korean K-pop boy band, crafts melodic pop centered on dance rhythms and shaped by hip-hop alongside R&B. Worldwide breakthrough arrived when their 2013 debut album XOXO simultaneously led the South Korean Circle Albums chart and the Billboard World Albums chart while launching the hit single "Growl." Subsequent releases such as 2015's Exodus, 2016's EX'ACT, 2017's The War, and 2018's Don't Mess Up My Tempo each claimed the top spot on the Circle Albums chart, with the last of these also reaching number 23 on the Billboard 200. The 2018 album Obsession again topped both the Circle and Billboard World charts, and the band returned in 2023 with its seventh studio album, Exist.
S.M. Entertainment producer Lee Soo-Man assembled the twelve-member lineup in Seoul during 2011, splitting the members into the two subgroups EXO-K and EXO-M. Although both units record identical material, EXO-K concentrates on domestic performances in South Korea with Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, and Sehun, whereas EXO-M targets Mandarin-speaking listeners in China featuring Xiumin, Lay, and Chen. The departures of founding members Luhan, Kris, and Tao occurred across 2014 and 2015. EXO-CBX, the first official subgroup, formed in 2016 around Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin, while EXO-SC followed in 2019 led by Sehun and Chanyeol.
Several singles appeared in 2012, among them "What Is Love," "History," and the Mama EP. The full-length debut XOXO surfaced in May 2013 and contained "Growl," which climbed to number two on South Korean charts and number three on the Billboard World chart. The Korean-language "Kiss" version and the Mandarin "Hug" version each reached the summit of the Billboard World Albums chart, and the album ultimately surpassed one million copies sold. Later that year the group issued the mini-album Miracles in December, then delivered the third EP Overdose in 2014, which entered the Billboard 200 and established EXO as the highest-charting male K-pop group at that point. Kris and Luhan exited during the same year, reducing the roster to ten.
Exodus arrived in 2015 and, after earning multiple awards, topped charts in both Korea and the United States while also marking the first time a K-pop act appeared on Canadian charts. Tao became the third member to leave around this period. EXO sustained promotion with its first Japanese single, a re-recording of "Love Me Right," paired with the original Japanese track "Drop That." The fourth EP Sing for You closed the year, after which the band toured briefly across the United States and Canada in February 2016. EX'ACT, the third full-length album, followed that summer, succeeded by the fifth EP For Life in December. The War, EXO's fourth studio album, emerged in summer 2017 and again led both Korean and U.S. World Albums charts.
Countdown marked the Japanese debut in early 2018 and combined earlier material with new tracks including "Electric Kiss." One month later the group performed at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Don't Mess Up My Tempo, the fifth album, secured EXO's first U.S. chart entry by landing just outside the Billboard 200 Top 20. The live presentation Exo Planet 4: Elyxion Dot opened 2019, and the sixth album Obsession arrived later that year, another Korean number one that also became the band's fourth Billboard 200 entry.
After completing promotional duties for Obsession, Chen and Suho entered mandatory military service. Xiumin and D.O. rejoined the lineup upon finishing their own service terms. In 2021 the EP Don't Fight the Feeling returned EXO to the top of Korean charts and included vocals from former member Lay.
Exist, the seventh studio album, appeared in July 2023 and contained the R&B-heavy singles "Let Me In" and "Hear Me Out" plus the dance track "Cream Soda." Although all nine members participated in recording, promotion proceeded as a nine-piece unit while Kai fulfilled military obligations and Lay focused on solo work. The album again led the South Korean Circle Albums chart and reached the Top 20 in Japan.
