Biography
Day6 set themselves apart from other K-pop acts by favoring luminous pop melodies reinforced by expansive rock energy instead of pounding beats and rap-driven anthems. The band entered the scene in 2015 with the mini-album The Day, which landed outside Korea’s Top Five yet climbed to number two on the Billboard World Albums chart, and they followed with additional EPs plus the two 2017 full-lengths Sunrise and Moonrise, all of which reached the Korean and U.S. Top Ten. Expanding beyond those markets, Day6 also targeted Japan, where they debuted in 2018 via the album Unlock; their fourth Korean studio effort, The Book of Us: Entropy, appeared the next year, and a run of EPs that included the 2024 release Fourever kept the group high on the charts for several more seasons.
Originally assembled in 2014 as the five-piece 5LIVE, the lineup featured Sungjin on vocals and guitar, Jae on guitar and vocals, Young K on bass and vocals, Junhyeok on keyboards, and Wonpil on keyboards and vocals. Drummer Dowoon joined in 2015, prompting the name change to Day6 and the issuance of their first EP that same year. Shortly afterward Junhyeok departed from the band and JYP Entertainment, leaving a five-member roster that issued the second EP Daydream before beginning work on a debut full-length.
January 2017 marked the launch of the “Every Day6” monthly singles series, which delivered two new tracks each month; the January-through-May recordings were gathered for the summer 2017 album Sunrise, while the July-through-November tracks formed Moonrise, released late that year. Around the same period the group tested the North American market with a meet-and-greet tour across the United States and Canada, then entered Japan in early 2018 with the single “If -Mata Aetara-” and supporting dates. A second Japanese single, “Stop the Rain,” surfaced that summer, one month before the greatest-hits collection The Best Day. The third EP, Shoot Me: Youth, Pt. 1, arrived in June 2018, reached number three on the Korean chart, entered the Billboard World Albums Top Ten, and became their strongest seller to that point.
October 2018 brought renewed attention to Japan with the full-length Unlock, which climbed to number 21 on the Oricon chart on the strength of the earlier track “If -Mata Aetara-.” The fourth EP, Book of Us: Gravity, followed in July 2019, and October saw the third Korean studio album The Book of Us: Entropy, highlighted by “Sweet Chaos,” which peaked at number four on the Gaon Album Chart. Book of Us: Demon arrived in May 2020 and Book of Us: Negentropy the next year; all three Book of Us EPs finished inside Korea’s Top Three.
Jae exited the group in 2021. The following year Wonpil issued the solo album Pilmography—marking the first full-length solo project from any member—while Young K and Dowoon also pursued individual releases. After the remaining four members completed military service, Day6 staged a Christmas concert at Korea University’s Hwajeong Tiger Dome in December 2023. Their eighth EP, Fourever, appeared in March 2024, featuring the Korean Top 30 single “Welcome to the Show” and reaching number three on the album chart.
