Biography
Korean pop boy band VIXX originated when Jellyfish Entertainment assembled the act in 2012 through the MyDOL reality competition. Fans selected the six members who took part in the survival program and also chose the group name, an acronym for “Voice, Visual, Value in Excelsis.” The lineup consists of N (Cha Hak-yeon), Leo (Jung Taek-woon), Ken (Lee Jae-hwan), Ravi (Kim Won-sik), Hyuk (Han Sang-hyuk), and Hongbin Lee. Shortly after forming, the sextet released its first single, “Super Hero,” then followed with the debut EP Hyde in May 2013. Their inaugural full-length album, Voodoo, appeared later that year, reaching the top of the Korean charts while landing inside the Top Five in both Taiwan and the United States. To support the record, VIXX launched an international tour that visited Asia, Europe, and North America. In 2014 the group made its Japanese debut via the compilation Darkest Angels and also delivered its second EP, Error.
The following year VIXX targeted Mandarin-speaking audiences by issuing the stand-alone single “Destiny Love,” which promoted the Boys’ Record EP released through Avex Taiwan. Within the same period, rapper Ravi and vocalist Leo formed the VIXX LR sub-unit and unveiled the Beautiful Liar EP. The band closed 2015 with its official second album, Chained Up, which topped charts in Korea and Taiwan and reached number three on the Billboard World Albums chart. Early in 2016 the Japanese campaign advanced with Depend on Me, the first collection of original Japanese-language material; the album topped the Oricon Daily chart and peaked at number four on the weekly ranking. The remainder of the year centered on the Vixx 2016 Conception Project, themed around Greek mythology. Three separate EPs—Zelos, Hades, and Kratos—were issued and later gathered on the 2016 Conception Ker trilogy compilation.
VIXX marked its fifth anniversary in 2017 with the fourth EP, Shangri-La, which charted across Asia and entered the Top 15 on both the Billboard World Albums and Heatseekers lists. Less than a year afterward the group released its third album, Eau de VIXX, led by the single “Scientist.” The single “Parallel” followed in September 2019.
