Biography
Cube Entertainment assembled the seven-piece K-pop act BtoB, whose full name stands for Born to Beat. The group launched its recording career in the spring of 2012 and secured mainstream attention within a few years through the chart-topping 2014 EP Beep Beep and the 2015 full-length Complete. Around the same period the band entered the Japanese market, where its album 24/7 reached the top position. BtoB sustained its visibility through the latter half of the decade while launching two offshoots, BtoB Blue and BtoB 4U. In 2021 the remaining active members issued the EP 4U: Outside under the parent group’s name.
BtoB first appeared on the music program M Countdown in March 2012, performing as Seo Eun-kwang, Lee Min-hyuk, Lee Chang-sub, Im Hyun-sik, Peniel Shin, Yook Sung-jae, and Jung Il-hoon. One month later the self-titled Born to Beat EP arrived, introducing the tracks “Insane” and “Imagine,” and the members also began filming their initial reality series, Amazon. A string of additional EPs followed over the next twenty-four months, culminating in a breakthrough at the summit of the South Korean charts in 2014. That year every release—Beep Beep, Move, and The Winter’s Tale—reached number one, as did the 2015 debut studio album Complete. The following year brought further expansion: the band’s first Japanese album, 24/7, topped the local chart, and the four-member subunit BtoB Blue was introduced, comprising Eun-kwang, Chang-sub, Hyun-sik, and Sung-jae. In 2017 the full lineup delivered its second Korean album, Brother Act, which also registered on Billboard’s U.S. World Albums chart.
Following the 2018 EP This Is Us, Eun-kwang entered mandatory military service. Lee Min-hyuk assumed leadership duties for the album Hour Moment before he, too, reported for duty. By 2020 Hyun-sik and Sung-jae had likewise begun their service commitments, prompting the remaining members to form the new subunit BtoB 4U, which released the 2021 EP 4U: Outside.
