South Korean boy band Pentagon emerged in 2016 as a ten-piece act assembled by Cube Entertainment through the Mnet reality series Pentagon Maker. The lineup comprises Korean vocalists and rappers Jinho Cho, Hui (Lee Hoe-taek), Hongseok Yang, E'Dawn (Kim Hyo-jong), Shinwon Koh, Yeo One (Yeo Chang-gu), Kino (Kang Hyung-gu), and Wooseok Jung alongside Chinese member Yan An from Shanghai and Japanese member Yuto Adachi from Nagano.

Their first EP reached number seven on the Gaon chart after its October 2016 release. Five Senses, the follow-up, climbed to number five several months afterward. Pentagon entered the Japanese market in March 2017 with the EP Gorilla, tied to its title track, which landed at number six on Gaon and number three on Oricon. Three months later the Ceremony EP marked their initial Billboard world chart appearance at number 14. Demo_01 improved on that placement by reaching number five in the United States, and the group finished the year with Demo_02.

Throughout 2018 the band issued the Japanese projects Violet and Shine along with the Korean EPs Thumbs Up! and Positive, the latter becoming their strongest seller at the time. Following E'Dawn’s exit they returned in 2019 with Genie:us, which contained the hit single “Sha La La,” before issuing the aptly named Sum(me:r).
