Alex Bleeker, who helped establish the indie band Real Estate as its founding bassist, infused his separate endeavors with a broader cosmic and jam-band sensibility. Around the same period Real Estate formed in 2009, his rotating ensemble Alex Bleeker and the Freaks began operating, and he later issued the entirely solo Heaven on the Faultline in 2021.

Born in New Jersey in 1986, Bleeker attended school alongside future Real Estate colleagues Martin Courtney and Matt Mondanile. After the three pursued separate colleges they maintained contact, and in 2009 they reunited to launch Real Estate, formalizing the loose, improvisational sessions they had started as classmates. While Real Estate earned widespread praise and an international following, Bleeker simultaneously tracked material he had written for release under the Alex Bleeker and the Freaks name. The first of those efforts, a self-titled album, surfaced in 2009 with Bleeker handling guitar and vocals and supported by Real Estate associates and affiliated musicians. How Far Away followed in 2013, Country Agenda appeared in 2015, and assorted 7-inch singles plus cassette-only items emerged in the intervening years.

Alongside his ongoing Real Estate road work, Bleeker mounted separate tours to promote the Freaks releases. The Grateful Dead remained a central touchstone for his compositions, and during one 2015 Freaks concert Bill Kreutzmann sat in on drums. Returning in 2021, Bleeker delivered Heaven on the Faultline under his own name; recorded across multiple years, the album reached listeners in March via the Night Bloom label.
