Born in Forli, Italy, in 1954 as Carla Bissi, the Italian pop star known professionally as Alice or Alice Visconti entered the music scene in 1971 as a singer-songwriter who performed her own material at the piano. Visibility increased after her victory at the 1981 Sanremo Music Festival. Over the following decades a succession of albums, singles, and concert tours enabled her to pursue stylistic shifts into classical, jazz, ambient, and electronic territories. Continually drawn toward fresh sonic approaches, she delivered contrasting projects that included the 1999 album God Is My DJ, featuring her readings of spiritual pieces by Popol Vuh and Gavin Bryars among others, as well as 2012’s Samsara, which placed her in a cinematic folk-pop setting accented by new age synthesizer textures.
