Led by Australian songwriter and producer Martin Kennedy, All India Radio produces ambient electronic pop that merges 1960s psychedelia, 1970s Krautrock, and present-day approaches spanning downtempo to chillgaze. The project first attracted notice in the 2000s by releasing a run of evocative, frequently cinematic works such as The Inevitable, Permanent Evolutions, and The Silent Surf. Its recordings have appeared in television programs including CSI: Miami, One Tree Hill, The Lying Game, and Emmerdale. Kennedy has additionally joined the Church vocalist Steve Kilbey for several albums, among them the 2014 sci-fi soundtrack The Rare Earth and 2017's Glow and Fade.

Raised in Tasmania, Martin Kennedy developed an early interest in science-fiction books and films while discovering music through expansive recordings by Pink Floyd, Jean Michel Jarre, and Brian Eno. He performed with the indie rock band Pray TV prior to forming All India Radio in the late 1990s. Merging his affection for vintage psychedelic and space rock with contemporary ambient electronic layers, he has maintained a consistent output of albums that includes 2001's All India Radio on Pinnacle, 2005's Echo Other on Minty Fresh, and 2016's The Slow Light on Minty Fresh. Although he composes and tracks most material independently, he regularly works with musicians such as Mark Wendt, Selena Cross, Leona Gray, Josh Roydhouse, Ben Sims, and Michael Evans-Barker.

Kennedy's 2004 solo release The Big Spaceship reached the ears of the Church's Steve Kilbey, prompting their ongoing partnership under the name Kilbey Kennedy. Their joint recordings encompass 2011's White Magic, 2015's Inside We Are the Same, and 2017's Glow and Fade. Kilbey also contributes from time to time to All India Radio projects. Kennedy resumed activity under the All India Radio name in 2019 with the albums Undulate and Eternal.
