Biography
Somali-Canadian R&B singer/songwriter Amaal crafts tracks that balance social awareness with sexual freedom. Her style fuses atmospheric production and emotionally vulnerable lyrics, resulting in a Juno nomination for the 2019 debut EP Black Dove, followed by the 2021 release Milly.
Born Amaal Nuux in Mogadishu, Somalia, she left the country as an infant when her family escaped the civil war and relocated to Toronto. In a conservative Muslim home, access to music remained limited, yet school friendships gradually introduced her to pop, hip-hop, and R&B, prompting her to begin creating her own songs during her teenage years. A return visit to Somalia after high school shifted her focus toward politically conscious themes, leading her to issue early-2010s tracks under her full name. The 2012 single "Mufasa" later accumulated millions of streams online, while follow-ups such as "Last Ones" and "Who Are We?" achieved comparable reach. She subsequently channeled energy into advocacy, serving as a Goodwill Ambassador for Somali women and children.
Releasing material under her first name alone, Amaal issued Black Dove in 2019.
