Biography
The composing partnership known as Antônio Carlos e Jocafi consists of two highly acclaimed songwriters whose works have been covered by numerous performers worldwide. Between 1971 and 1996 the pair released thirteen albums under their own names. Antônio Carlos Marques Pinto, who played guitar in the Carlos Lacerda Orchestra, composed the piece “Festa no Terreiro de Alaketu” that Maria Creusa introduced during the third edition of the Brazilian Popular Music Festival in 1967. The following year he joined forces with José Carlos Figueiredo, better known as Jocafi, to create “Catendê,” which Maria Creuza performed at the fifth installment of the same festival in 1969. Maria Creuza went on to include that composition on a 1971 recording and featured additional songs by the duo across various releases. The duo’s own 1971 rendition of “Você Abusou” achieved remarkable popularity and continues to attract new interpretations by other artists. During the same era they enjoyed further acclaim through “Mudei de Idéia” and “Desacato.” Their international profile reached its height thanks to the tracks “Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos” and “Diacho de Dor,” the latter securing second place at the World Popular Song Festival held in Tokyo, Japan.
