Having established himself as both a performing pianist and an instructor of music, Antonio Pompa-Baldi divides his professional efforts between worldwide concert tours and his faculty position at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Born in Foggia, he sustains ties to his homeland by directing the Todi International Music Masters, an annual summer program, and by committing to recordings of Italian repertoire, among them the 2018 Steinway & Sons release Napoli. His early international recognition came through awards earned at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition held in Paris during 1998, followed by success at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 1999 and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2001. Orchestras across five continents have featured him as soloist, including a notable presentation of Rachmaninov’s full set of piano concertos together with the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini alongside the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, he has conducted master classes in his capacity as honorary guest professor at Beijing’s China Conservatory of Music. His discography encompasses the entirety of Grieg’s piano output, recordings devoted to Hummel, Schumann, Brahms, and Rheinberger issued by Centaur, and the Steinway & Sons collection The Rascal and the Sparrow, which presents his transcriptions for piano of vocal works by Francis Poulenc and Édith Piaf.
