Aslay

Emerging at just 16 years old, Aslay introduced a grounded perspective on Tanzania’s varied Bongo Flava sound through his first solo single, “Nakusemea,” issued in 2011. After spending several years with the boy band Yamoto Band, he resumed his solo path and reentered the charts via the 2017 track “Nibebe.” Although he generally favored standalone releases, he issued the full-length Kipenda Roho in 2019.

Born Aslay Isihaka Nassoro, the artist first surfaced as a teenager in 2011 when his debut single “Nakusemea” became a hit across Tanzania and neighboring East African countries, prompting regional tours and follow-up tracks such as “Niwe Nawe,” which featured Temba. In 2013 he entered Yamoto Band—previously known as Mkubwa na Wanawe Outfit—alongside Beka Flavor, Enock Bella, and Mbosso, contributing vocals and songwriting. The group’s short yet prosperous period included the 2015 EP Hits of Aslay before its 2017 dissolution, prompted by members including Aslay choosing individual careers. He quickly scored another success with 2017’s “Nibebe” and, committed to presenting only original solo material in live settings, accelerated his output of new songs, culminating in the 2019 album Kipenda Roho.
