Born Jeffery Campbell on 22 December 1982 in Kintyre, Jamaica, West Indies, the future artist spent his rural childhood mastering the craft of DJing and delivering performances at countless family gatherings. The name Assassin originated during school competitions in which fellow students sharpened their own turntable skills; following the dancehall custom of clashes, these contests determined the leading DJ, and Campbell earned the title after decisively eliminating every rival. Although his entire family offered support, an older brother ultimately convinced him to channel his abilities toward a professional dancehall path. Widely touted as the DJ for the new millennium, Campbell soon began voicing rhythms alongside Lloyd ‘John John’ James at the studio run by the producer’s father, King Jammy, whose hit-making continued even as his son cultivated strong ties to younger audiences. While his DJ reputation grew, Assassin also supplied lyrics to fellow artists, and in 1998 the track ‘Big Up All The Shotta’ became a hit for the established DJ Spragga Benz. Building on that success with Benz, he went on to pen further hits for Frisco Kid, Thriller U and Elephant Man. His solo recording career took shape through a string of releases such as ‘Money Maker’, ‘Pon The Ends’, ‘Friend And Company’, ‘Dam It’, ‘How We Roll’, ‘Two Words For You’, ‘Dun It All’, ‘You Young’ and the collaborative single with Spragga Benz, ‘Who Dem Want Fi Swear’. International recognition arrived in 2001 with the track ‘Won’t’.
