Formed in Los Angeles, the quartet known as The Autumns—Eric Crissman, Frank Koroshec, Matthew Kelly, and Jon Santana—first assembled during their final year of high school in 1992. Although their sound carried clear echoes of other artists, the group earned genuine respect from several of those same influences, demonstrating they were not mere copyists. Local performances soon drew attention from multiple record companies, including some with substantial financial resources, yet the members consistently chose artistic autonomy over larger offers. They ultimately joined the independent imprint Risk, founded by Frank Volpe, the ex-manager of Concrete Blonde and INXS. Their debut release, the Suicide at Strell Park EP, appeared in 1997, followed later that same year by the full-length album The Angel Pool. In 1999 the band issued Winter in a Silver Box, a four-track EP containing two remixes. They then collaborated with Simon Raymonde, the Cocteau Twins bassist whose work had notably shaped their approach, and he produced the 2000 album In the Russet Gold of This Vain Hour. One year afterward came the four-song EP The Autumns Present Le Carillon.
