Nigerian singer/songwriter Ayra Starr blends self-assured, uplifting lyrics with Afropop grooves and smooth R&B textures. National breakthrough arrived via her 2021 debut album 19 & Dangerous and its chart-topping single “Bloody Samaritan.” Under contract with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records imprint, she devoted much of the following year to joint projects with Ladipoe, Kelly Rowland, and Magixx while dropping her own tracks “Stars” and “Rush.” Critical praise greeted her second album, The Year I Turned 21, upon its 2024 release.

Born in the Beninese city of Cotonou, Starr was raised amid music and joined a local church choir at age ten. Her formative listening spanned 2Face Idibia and Angélique Kidjo to Shakira and Nicki Minaj. In 2018 she began modeling for Lagos-based Quove agency while uploading cover versions online. After sharing her original track “Damage,” label head Don Jazzy offered her a deal with Mavin. Her self-titled debut EP surfaced in early 2021, presenting an R&B- and neo-soul-inflected Afro-pop style that led Nigerian digital and streaming rankings. Brother Dami co-wrote its hit single “Away,” as he has done for many of her songs. Mavin issued the full-length 19 & Dangerous that August. Framed as a loose concept piece tracing a Gen-Z girl’s coming-of-age, the set fused Afropop, R&B, trap, jazz, and alté, anchored by the blockbuster “Bloody Samaritan,” which reached number one on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50 and marked the first time a female solo artist had done so. Alongside solo releases “Rush,” her initial major international success, and “Stars,” 2022 found her featured on ElGrandeToto’s “Comforter,” Skip Marley’s “Jane,” and a Kelly Rowland-assisted remix of “Bloody Samaritan.”

Further hits followed in 2023 with the chart-topping “Stability,” “Stamina” alongside Tiwa Savage and Young Jonn, and “Rhythm & Blues.” Starr unveiled “Commas” in 2024 and joined Rvssian and Rauw Alejandro on the widely streamed “Santa.” Her sophomore album, The Year I Turned 21, featuring Asake, Giveon, and Anitta, appeared at the close of May.
