Nigerian vocalist Victony arrived on the Afrobeats landscape of the early 2020s equipped with a versatile, tone-shifting vocal approach, quickly securing one of 2022’s standout tracks in the form of the infectious “Soweto.”

Anthony Ebuka Victor, who performs as Victony, spent his formative years in the Orsu region of Imo State, where exposure to Drake and Kendrick Lamar sparked an affinity for hip-hop. Eager to carve out his place in that world, he spent the late 2010s uploading lyrically focused online covers of tracks such as Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” and Tems’ “Try Me.” Initial attention arrived with the 2017 release of his debut mixtape The Outlaw King, though his focus soon pivoted from hip-hop toward Afrobeats.

Victony channeled his wide-ranging voice into polished, groove-driven anthems, fully committing to the style on his first EP Saturn (2020) and scoring an early breakthrough via the Mayorkun-assisted single “Holy Father,” which swiftly claimed the top spot on Nigerian streaming charts in 2021. Momentum built steadily as each subsequent release accumulated multi-million streaming figures; 2022 brought particular prominence when “Soweto” emerged as one of the year’s major Afrobeats successes, a dancefloor-primed anthem that surpassed 100 million streams inside its first twelve months. Capitalizing on that traction, he unveiled multiple prominent remixes throughout 2023 featuring Rema, Don Toliver, Omah Lay, and Tiimie.
