Baby Bash

Although the smooth rapper Baby Bash cannot pinpoint the origin of his “Bash” nickname, the alternate handle Baby Beesh stemmed from his routine of cruising in a Mitsubishi. Born in the Vallejo, California vicinity in 1975 to a Latin mother and an Anglo father, both of whom later succumbed to heroin addiction, he was raised by his grandmother after his uncles had steeped him in an assortment of musical styles. Deeply embedded in the region’s underground Latin rap circuit, he aligned himself with outfits such as Potna Deuce and Latino Velvet alongside fellow Latino rappers Kid Frost and Jay Tee.

A guest spot in Houston, Texas, with the South Park Mexican crew opened his eyes to that city’s robust backing of homegrown talent and to the practical advantage of selling his California residence in exchange for two Texas properties. While teaming with Frankie J. and the Kumbia Kings constituted a pivotal step, he still entertained basketball aspirations and trafficked speed. Lacking the height for the court, he instead found traction in music after linking with producer Happy Perez. Forsaking hoops and relinquishing drug sales—except for his cherished cannabis—he issued Savage Dreams under the Baby Beesh moniker on the Dope House label in 2001; On Tha Cool arrived the following year.

Absorbing influences from E-40 to Tom Petty to Steel Pulse, Baby Bash broadened his palette and unveiled the sleek single “Suga Suga.” Its explosive reception in Texas led Universal to sign him, and the resulting major-label debut, Tha Smokin’ Nephew, appeared in 2003. Super Saucy followed in 2005. Two years later, Cyclone reached stores, its title track bolstered by T-Pain. Between projects, Bash pursued acting and philanthropy, and he joined Santana’s 2008 single “This Boy’s Fire” alongside Jennifer Lopez. His fourth major-label effort, Bashtown, surfaced on Upstairs Records in 2011 with contributions from E-40, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and others. Unsung: The Album arrived in 2013, featuring “Break It Down” with Too $hort and “Slide” with Miguel. Ronnie Rey All Day, issued in 2014, reunited him with Paul Wall and Frankie J. Don’t Panic, It’s Organic emerged in 2016, and the next year he again collaborated with Frankie J on Sangria: The Album.
