Biography
DJ Kane first rose to prominence as the primary singer for Los Kumbia Kings, delivering lead vocals on tracks including “No Tengo Dinero.” After the group’s early run, he stepped away in 2003 to launch a solo path that quickly produced the charting single “La Negra Tomasa” along with multiple Latin Grammy nominations. Born Jason Cano in Houston, Texas, on June 8, 1975, he grew up chiefly in Brooklyn amid the sounds of hip-hop and reggae. Music captured his attention early; by age twelve he had assembled his own rap crew. His professional recordings began in the late 1990s when, performing as DJ Kane, he joined the original roster of A.B. Quintanilla III’s Los Kumbia Kings. That lineup released the platinum-selling albums Amor, Familia y Respeto… (1999), Shhh! (2001), All Mixed Up: Los Remixes (2002), and 4 (2003) before internal tensions caused a split; the four projects together moved roughly five million copies. Kane handled vocals on the hits “Shhh!,” “Boom Boom,” “No Tengo Dinero,” and “Desde Que No Estás Aquí.” He and several bandmates departed for individual careers, after which he signed with EMI—the same imprint that had housed Los Kumbia Kings—and assembled his own ensemble. The resulting 2004 album, DJ Kane, blended Mexican regional music with R&B, reggae, hip-hop, and techno textures. Its singles “La Negra Tomasa” and “Mía” gained traction, earning the project a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Urban Album; one of its producers, Gen Rubin, received a separate nod for Producer of the Year. Kane followed with Capitulo II: Brinca in 2005, which earned a Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Tropical Regional Mexican Album category—an award ultimately claimed by his former colleagues in Los Kumbia Kings.
