Biography
Grupo Bryndis stand as an enduring, Grammy-winning institution within Mexico’s grupero tradition of popular music. Their sound fuses Mexican cumbia, pop, and banda textures even though the ensemble has never included a horn section. Millions of recordings have moved from their catalog, and they maintain a schedule of sold-out concerts throughout Mexico, the United States, Central America, and South America. From the outset their guiding declaration has remained “the group that sings of love.”
The ensemble formed in Cerritos, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with Mauro Posada serving as leader and principal songwriter alongside Gerardo Izaguirre on bass guitar, Claudio Montano on keyboards, drummer and second vocalist Juan Guevara, and singer Tony Solis. After Solis departed in 1988, Juan’s brother Guadalupe assumed the role of lead vocalist. For years the musicians performed in local and regional venues while composing original songs and interpreting traditional repertoire, material by established composers, and selections from fellow acts. Several independent albums preceded their 1988 signing with Disa, a relationship that lasted until 2007; their first substantial radio exposure arrived via a cover of Miguel Gallardo’s “Otro Ocupa Mi Lugar.”
A decade of persistence culminated in 1994 with the breakthrough release Por el Amor, certified gold that same year. Subsequent singles and albums climbed the charts in steady succession, establishing the group as a sought-after touring attraction whose sales remained robust through the 1990s and well into the following decade. Among the charting singles were “Te Vas con El,” “La Última Canción,” “Otro Ocupa Mi Lugar,” “El Quinto Trago,” “Atrás de Mi Ventana,” “Te Esperaré,” “Quizás Sí, Quizás No,” “La Chica del Este,” “Perdóname,” “Entre Tú y Yo,” “Secreto Amor,” and “La Chica del Este.” The band’s output proved prolific: each studio album typically generated at least one live recording or multiple hits collections, occasionally incorporating newly recorded tracks. Over time their catalog grew richer in romantic ballads, the ensemble’s approach becoming smoother with experience and thereby attracting fresh listeners while retaining longtime followers.
In 2007 the group received a Latin Grammy for Solo Pienso en Ti and subsequently moved from Disa to EMI. Following the 2008 release La Magía de Tu Amor—their first album composed entirely of original material—Guadalupe and Juan exited the lineup, an unforeseen development that allowed the remaining members to pause and reconsider their direction.
Grupo Bryndis resumed recording in 2010 with Más Allá del Tiempo y la Distancia, once again featuring original lead singer Tony Solis. The leadoff single “Doy la Vida por un Beso” reached the Top Ten, while Mauro Posadas, Jr. joined as the new drummer. The 2011 album Huele a Peligro appeared with the same personnel; its title track served as the first single. An extended tour ensued. During that tour in 2012, Andy Zuniga was enlisted as second vocalist and percussionist to assist Solis, who had grown weary of constant travel and the industry. Solis departed for the second time in 2013. Zuniga assumed lead vocal duties on the 2014 Fonovisa debut Adicto a Ti, whose title track and follow-up single “El Querreque” performed strongly at radio and on the charts. After another yearlong tour the group took a brief hiatus before returning to the studio to complete A Nuestro Estilo, issued in early 2016.
