Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Lorenzo Antonio entered the world in Albuquerque, NM, though his albums achieved their strongest sales across Latin America, moving millions of units. He inaugurated his recording career in April 1982 by claiming first place in the songwriting contest at the Juguermos A Cantar festival, delivering “Vamos a Jugar” alongside sisters Carolina, Kristyna, Rosamaria, and Veronica, who later performed together as the vocal group Sparx. That same year the Fonographic Industry presented him with the Amprofon gold award for the album Juguermos A Cantar. His audience grew further when he served as opening act for Menudo at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City during April 1983. The following October he stood in for Mexico at the America, Este Es Tu Cancion festival held in Orlando, FL. After Busco Un Amor earned gold certification in 1984, Antonio issued the platinum-selling 12 Rosas, which contained the Latino successes “Dile,” “No Llorare,” “El Idioma Del Amor,” and the title track. In the mid-’80s he stepped away from the stage to pursue studies at the University of New Mexico while writing and co-producing releases for Sparx. He returned in 1993 with the first of two tribute albums saluting Mexico-born singer/songwriter Juan Gabriel, issuing the second volume two years afterward. Two joint projects with Sparx followed—Sparx Y Lorenzo Antonio Cantan Corridos in 1996 and its 1998 sequel—before he joined Fonovisa Records for the 1999 release Pura Miel and the 2001 set Lorenzo Antonio Y Sparx Las Madrecitas. He subsequently concentrated on the regional Mexican market, placing ten albums on the Striking Music label during the ensuing decade.
