Biography
Hailing from Tijuana, the prize-winning Los Tucanes de Tijuana maintain deep roots in Mexico’s norteño tradition. Although the ensemble has composed and performed across numerous styles, its signature output remains original narcocorridos that honor the exploits of outlaws and drug lords. Narcocorridos became the group’s primary focus following the 1988 release 14 Corrido Picudos (El Benefactor de Colima). The band has produced more than 60 albums and 75 singles, achieving worldwide sales exceeding 15 million units, many certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. Standout titles include the 1995 classic Mundo de Amor, 2007’s El Papa de Los Pollitos, and 2010’s La Arbol. Prior to the last of these, the musicians were prohibited from performing in their Baja California hometown after dedicating a concert to a cartel kingpin; that same year they became the first norteño act to appear at the Coachella Festival. The 2014 set Corridos Time: Temporada 1 (Soy Parrandero) reached number one on both the Mexican Regional and Top Latin albums charts, entered the Top 200, and earned platinum certification. A second volume followed in 2016 and likewise charted. In 2021 the quartet issued the four-disc career retrospective Antologia Musical.
Vocalist and guitarist Mario Quintero Lara—the sole unchanging member—founded Los Tucanes de Tijuana alongside vocalist and accordionist Joel Higuera, drummer David Servin, and bassist Mario Moreno. The quartet soon recorded for Alacran Records, which issued 14 Tucanazos Bien Pesados and Mundo de Amor in 1995. Strong sales prompted a move to EMI Latin. Additional affiliations with Unisono and Cintas Acuario yielded Amor Platonico in 1998; the same year saw the appearance of both Nuestras Primeras Canciones, Vol. 1 and Los Más Buscados. Me Gusta Burlar la Ley arrived in September 2000, followed that autumn by Mi Gusta Vivir de Noche on Universal Latino. Claves, Masacres y Fugas and Mission Especial both surfaced in early 2001. Over the ensuing dozen years the group maintained a torrid pace, delivering roughly 50 albums and compilations, among them Romance Norteño, Para Tucancillos y Tucancillas, Me Gusta la Banda, and Corridos a Quema Ropa, all released early in 2013.
The next year brought Corridos Time, Temporada 1: Soy a Parrandero, which featured narcocorridos such as “El Comandante Metro 3” (concerning late Gulf Cartel figure Samuel Flores Borrego), “Julián Pérez” (drawn from the 2011 film Salvando de Soldado Perez), and “El Shaka” (theme from the Mexican television series of identical title). The album performed strongly on airplay and sales charts, reaching the Top 200. A 2014 love-song collection, Perdóname Mi Amor, was also released. After extensive touring throughout 2015, the band unveiled the singles “Pinta de Magnate” and “Clave Z40” at the start of 2016; the album Corridos Time, Season Two: Los Implacables followed in March on Fonovisia. Although relentless road work continued, repeated personnel shifts hindered further studio activity. In 2021 Los Tucanes de Tijuana returned with the four-disc retrospective Antologia Musical.
