San Antonio's Los Rieleros del Norte rank with Los Tigres del Norte, Los Huracanes del Norte, and Conjunto Primavera as norteño music's "Big Four." Since releasing their first album, Leonel Garcia, in 1982, the group has steered the style's evolution. Their compositions and approach remain rooted in tradition, yet their sonic palette diverges: the saxophone frequently carries the primary melodic line above the core rhythm section of bajo sexto, drum kit, and electric bass. When accordion joins the arrangement, the result is a lush, dance-oriented, and deeply romantic texture. Tracks such as "El Columpio," "Te Quiero Mucho," "Amor Prohibido," and "Copa Sin Vino" have become enduring genre standards. Among more than three dozen long-players, Stampida Nortena, Prieta Orgullosa, and Aventura Pasada stand out as landmark recordings. The band has collected three Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, multiple industry and fan awards, and a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame. With co-founder Daniel Esquivel still leading on vocals and accordion through repeated lineup shifts, the ensemble remains active; its videos have accumulated hundreds of millions of streams. The 2019 album Seguimos Firme and the simultaneous non-album single "A Ti Mi Lupita" both climbed the upper tiers of the World Music Latin and Latin streaming charts.

Bajo sexto guitarist Manuel "Meño" Lujan assembled Los Rieleros del Norte in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1979 while laboring on the railroad alongside fellow co-founders Manolo Morales on bajo sexto, Morales's two brothers, and vocalist Milo Menendez. Once the project turned professional, the musicians crossed into Pecos, Texas, secured a rehearsal space, and expanded the roster. They inked a deal with Joey International late in 1981 and issued Leonel Garcia the following year. Accordionist Daniel Esquivel and his drummer brother Alfredo entered the fold soon afterward. Although personnel rotated frequently in those formative seasons, the 1985 addition of lead singer Polo Urias for Corazón Cerrado marked a pivotal change. During the subsequent ten years the group notched more than a dozen successful singles, among them "Amor Prohibido," "No le Digas a Nadie," "En la Puerta de Esa Casa," "Una Aventura," "Me Lo Contaron Ayer," and "Copa Sin Vino." Urias departed in 1995 to launch his own Fonovisa act, yet the label simultaneously recruited Los Rieleros del Norte, elevating Esquivel to lead vocals; the strong chart and sales performance of 1996's Invencible confirmed the transition's viability. "Te Quiero Mucho" became the band's first Billboard Hot Latin Tracks number one in 1999.

The gold-certified Prieta Orgullosa arrived in 2000, coinciding with the ensemble's inaugural coast-to-coast United States tour that reached major Latino centers including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. In May 2002, while tracking Aqui en Cortito, Manuel Morales was hospitalized for emergency surgery; nearly two years of recovery followed before he exited to pursue a solo career. Under Esquivel's direction the band sustained its hit-making pace. Linea de Oro logged twenty-six weeks on the Top Latin Albums chart in 2007. That same year Los Rieleros del Norte guided saxophonist Keith Nieto and his two brothers—former members of Urias's group—in forming the hit ensemble La Maquinaria Nortena. Ni el Diablo Te Va a Querer reached number five and remained on the chart for twenty-four weeks in 2010, while Ayer, Hoy y Siempre peaked at number eleven in 2012. Between 2003 and 2015 the group placed five albums inside the Billboard Top 200 and ten more on the Top Latin and Mexican Regional lists, among them Abriendo Caminos, Y Que el Mundo Ruede, En Vivo Para Ti, and Corridos y Canciones de Mi Tierra. The roster stabilized with Lujan switching to electric bass, Eugenio "Pemo" González on saxophone, and Daniel's nephew Jose Luis Esquivel handling bajo sexto.

In 2017 Trayectoria Nortena registered on streaming charts, as did 2019's Seguimos Firmes and its companion single "A Ti Mi Lupita," which entered the Top 20 of the streaming world music rankings. Los Rieleros del Norte also joined the early wave of Latin acts to appear at the Coachella Music Festival that year.
