Biography
Hailing from Mexico’s Sinaloa state, Julión Álvarez y Su Norteño Banda constitute a leading regional Mexican outfit. The ensemble’s frontman, Álvarez, was born April 11, 1983. After aligning with Machete Music, a Universal Latino subsidiary, the band scored its first major commercial breakthrough with the 2007 full-length Corazón Mágico, whose track listing featured the hit single “Las Mulas de Moreno.” Momentum from that release prompted two live projects the next year: Desde Mazatlan: A Mover el Culito, issued by Machete Music, and the more eccentric Cumbia del Río, released by Disa and consisting of concert recordings plus three separate versions of the title song. A steady run of chart successes throughout the 2010s positioned Álvarez among norteño music’s foremost figures. He collected multiple Latin Grammy nominations and served on the judging panel of the television contest La Voz... Mexico. Their 2017 album Ni Diablo Ni Santo received a Grammy nomination in the Best Regional Mexican Music Album (Including Tejano) category.
