Luis Coronel, a onetime boxer, has built a thriving career as a vocalist specializing in romantic regional Mexican music delivered through a distinctly contemporary urban lens. His story-driven videos along with his recorded singles and full-length projects have crossed traditional stylistic boundaries, drawing a broad spectrum of Latin pop listeners. Tucson, Arizona, provided his birthplace, where parents of Mexican origin raised him; by age six he was already performing in local church choirs. During adolescence he pursued boxing, yet after one bout he performed a song while still inside the ring, an impromptu moment captured on video. Posting that clip on YouTube triggered an immediate viral surge that reshaped his trajectory almost instantly, prompting him to abandon the sport in favor of music. He began regularly sharing song performances on both YouTube and Facebook, and the expanding audience on those platforms caught the eye of Del Records, which offered him a contract at sixteen. His videos have since accumulated more than a million views, while his Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts each maintain hundreds of thousands of followers, among them fellow singer Luis Ortiz. Several of his singles, among them “Mi Niña Traviesa,” “Será Mas Fácil,” and “Escápate,” have registered on the charts. The debut album Con la Frente en Alto appeared in September 2013 and climbed to the summit of Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart inside three weeks. One year afterward, Quiero Ser Tu Dueño arrived and secured the top position on the Top Latin Albums chart, marking his first entry inside the Top 40 of the all-genre Billboard 200. At the 2016 Premio Lo Nuestro ceremony he received honors for Regional Mexican Album of the Year and Regional Mexican Male Artist of the Year. Despite an intensive touring schedule spanning multiple continents, he returned to the studio and personally selected every track for the subsequent project. Advance singles “Dime Qué Se Siente” and “Ral Como Eres” reached peaks of number 23 and number 45, respectively. The completed album Ahora Soy Yo surfaced in October 2017, entering at number one on both Latin Albums Sales and Regional Mexican Albums while landing at number two on Top Latin Albums.
