Possessing a rich and dramatic tenor, an innate flair for spinning tales, and exceptional command of his instruments, the Sonoran artist Carin Leon stands out as a multifaceted talent. He serves as principal songwriter, guitarist, and producer for the Mexican Regional chart act Grupo Arranke, pens material for peers such as Christian Nodal, Cutaes de Sinaloa, and Adriel Favela, and maintains a thriving solo career. His core aim centers on restoring the foundational ranchera and norteño spirit within música mexicana, while his compositions freely intermingle ranchera, banda, mariachi, and corrido elements. Launching his independent path in 2018, he has cut more than eighty tracks, among them the Top Ten Mexican Regional success “Me La Avente,” featured on the well-received 2019 album El Malo. Even as he issues his own projects—including the 2021 studio set Inédito and the 2022 live recording Cura Local—he continues performing with Grupo Arranke. In 2023 he reentered the Top Ten of the Latin Albums chart and secured his second Latin Grammy for Colmillo de Leche. The following year brought the Top 50 country single “The One (Pero No Como Yo),” a collaboration with Kane Brown that led off the June release Boca Chueca, Vol. 1.

Born Oscar Armando de Leon Diaz La Huez in 1989 in Hermosillo, the principal city of Sonora in northwestern Mexico, Leon grew up in a household of amateur musicians yet remains the sole professional among them. Though he sang from toddlerhood, he did not pick up the guitar until high school; at fifteen he learned by ear, copying songs from the radio and from peers. A fast learner, he assembled his first group the next year with classmates and committed to music as a vocation. In 2010 he co-founded Grupo Arranke, taking on vocal and songwriting duties for the band that would achieve chart success on both sides of the border.

His solo ascent unfolded in tandem with the group’s momentum. Their breakthrough track “A Traves del Vaso” scaled a dozen Latin charts in 2017 and has since been reprised by multiple ensembles. In 2018 Leon issued four solo projects—Desvelada con Banda y Mariachi, A Puro Pelo, Pa Las de Vidrio, all recorded live, plus the studio album Amanecida con Todo y con Todos—each stylistically aligned with Grupo Arranke’s sound before a decisive shift occurred.

That change arrived with the pivotal 2019 album El Malo. Propelled by its number-six single “Me La Avente,” the record gained widespread airplay throughout Mexico and the southwestern United States by fusing regional styles—polkas, bandas, mariachis, rancheras, and corridos—often within individual songs. Leon’s staunchly traditional instrumentation, featuring strings, horns, accordions, acoustic guitars, bass, and snare drums, appealed equally to longtime listeners and a younger audience unconcerned with rigid genre boundaries. Following extensive solo and band touring, he delivered the thirty-four-track digital anthology Borrachera con Taka Takas in January 2020 and the live set Encerrados Perro Enfiestados in April. May 2021 brought the full-length Inédito, driven by the single “Otra a Tu Salud,” while 2022 saw the live albums Pistiembre Todo el Año and Cura Local plus the live single “El Rezado” with Enigma Norteño.

In May 2023 Leon unveiled his fifth studio album, the eighteen-track Colmillo de Leche. It featured joint performances with Camilo on “Ni Me Debes Ni Te Debo,” Pablo Alborán on “Piedra Papel,” and Angela Aguilar on “Vete Yendo,” along with a duet reading of Los Tigres Del Norte’s “Corazón de Oro” alongside the Hermosillo-based Los Hijos de Frank. Entering the Top Latin Albums chart at number ten and later peaking at three, the set also hosted the July guest spot on Kany Garcia’s “Te Lo Agradezco” and the August Maluma collaboration “Según Quien (Chisme).” That same month the second single “Indispensable” debuted at number ten on Latin Airplay before climbing to number one the following week; the album itself reached number five on the Mexican Regional Albums tally and earned the Latin Grammy for Best Norteño Album. Additional 2024 singles included “The One (Pero No Como Yo)” with Kane Brown and “It Was Always You (Siempre Fuiste Tú)” with Leon Bridges. June brought the eighteen-track Boca Chueca, Vol. 1, which moved beyond prior subtle cross-genre touches to fully integrate música mexicana melodies, harmonies, and rhythms with electrified indie rock, pop, neo-soul, country, gospel, and ska. Further partnerships on the album encompassed Pepe Aguilar on “Lamentablemente,” Bolela on “Aviso Importante,” and Panteón Rococó on “No Se.” Leon also returned to the Top Latin Albums chart with the 2024 live release Palabra de To’s.
