In the wake of stints across assorted groups and studio session work, the act known as Baby D came together during 1990 in north-west London, England. The lineup comprised Baby D handling vocals, MC Nino on keyboards and vocals, Claudio Galdez also on keyboards and vocals, and Dice serving as writer and producer. Their debut release, the single ‘Daydreaming’, appeared in January 1991; although it bypassed the national listings, it climbed to number 27 on the dance charts. Substantive recognition arrived in December 1993 when ‘Destiny’ entered the UK charts at number 69. A comparable modest performance followed with ‘Casanova’ in July 1994, yet momentum shifted markedly upon the November 1994 arrival of ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’, which ascended to number 1 and moved nearly 500,000 units. The track had already led the dance listings two years earlier. The subsequent single reworked The Korgis’ ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime’ under a new title. By then Dice had departed the core membership, though he continued contributing in a production role. Ahead of issuing ‘(Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime) I Need Your Loving’, rival claimants NRG surfaced with plans for their own recording, sparking a contest over publishing rights. Baby D’s rendition ultimately reached number 3 on the UK charts in June 1995. January 1996 brought ‘So Pure’ to the same peak position, after which the group’s first album appeared.
