The British dance project known as Liquid first took shape with Eamon Downes and Shane Heneghan sharing duties, before Heneghan stepped away from the partnership. Downes later revealed that he adopted the name Liquid out of fondness for the occasional drink. His earliest musical touchstones came from dub originators such as Barrington Levy and Scientist.

Liquid earned a place among the initial progressive house outfits to reach the UK Top 20 when the 1992 single ‘Sweet Harmony’—cut while the act still operated as a duo—appeared as a conscious response to the insistent tempo and volume of hardcore rave. The track was made for a mere £60, yet it returned to wider attention after XL Recordings issued a fresh version, securing the group an appearance on the UK television show Top Of The Pops.

Following an interval out of view, Downes resurfaced by releasing the Time To Get Up EP. He maintained a steady output of recordings across the rest of the 1990s and into the first years of the following decade, issuing notable singles such as ‘Strong’ in 1998 and ‘Orlando Dawn’ in 2000. Having long dismissed mainstream conventions, Downes turned his attention in subsequent work toward blending live vocals with acoustic instrumentation.
