Biography
British DJ and producer Breakage joined forces with Magnetic Man, Katy B, and Sub Focus to steer dubstep from its underground roots into mainstream visibility. Born in Slough, Berkshire in 1982, he first encountered dance music at seven through his foster brother; after relocating to London during his teenage years he immersed himself in the local jungle community. Initially working as a drum’n’bass artist, he delivered a widely praised remix of Nasty Habits’ “Here Come the Drums,” issued multiple EPs on the pioneering Reinforced imprint, and unveiled his debut album This Too Shall Pass in 2006. The following year he joined inspiration Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label and shifted his style toward the sparse rhythms and weighty low-end of the rising dubstep sound. Radio 1’s Zane Lowe selected his tracks for the “Hottest Record in the World Today” slot on five consecutive occasions, while his remixing services were sought by Florence and the Machine, David Guetta, and Massive Attack. His second album, Foundation, arrived in 2010 and included appearances from Skream, Burial, and Roots Manuva; the project also yielded his debut Top 40 single, “Fighting Fire.”
