London-born Andre Williams, known professionally as Shy FX, ranks among the longest-serving figures in jungle and drum'n'bass. As grandson of Jamaican sound-system pioneer Count Shelly, he built his reputation through ragga-jungle productions that fused rapid, fragmented breakbeats with reggae samples and dancehall vocals. His 1994 single “Original Nuttah,” recorded with UK Apache, became one of the first jungle tracks to reach the British Top 40 and has since endured as a defining anthem of the style. Even as the music evolved into drum’n’bass and shed much of its overt reggae character, Williams retained influence, issuing numerous club cuts—including the 1998 track “Bambaata”—while establishing the labels Ebony Recordings and Digital Soundboy. Beginning with the 2001 Top Ten hit “Shake Ur Body,” his ongoing partnership with T-Power introduced a pop and R&B dimension to the genre; he has also reworked or joined forces with Emeli Sandé, Dizzee Rascal, and Plan B. Later productions such as the 2016 single “Honey” with Kiko Bun and his 2018 revision of Jorja Smith’s “Let Me Down” revisited his reggae foundations. In 2024 he issued the full-length collaboration Rudeboy Design Soundtape alongside dancehall artist Mr. Williamz.

Williams entered the scene in 1993 with the breakbeat-hardcore release “Jungle Love” and soon joined SOUR, the label where he had earlier worked as a tape operator. Early singles “Gangsta Kid” and “Sound of the Beast” showcased his aggressive ragga-jungle approach, yet it was the third SOUR outing, the anthemic “Original Nuttah,” that achieved immediate commercial impact through its high-velocity rhythm and UK Apache’s raw scatting. The record quickly dominated dance floors, sold briskly, and entered the UK charts. Additional SOUR releases followed, culminating in the 1995 album Just an Example. That same year Williams launched Ebony Recordings, which put out hard-edged tracks such as “Wolf,” “The Message,” and “Bambaata”—energetic fusions of ragga attitude and old-school hip-hop motifs—while its Ivory sublabel issued understated rollers on white-label pressings.

Entering the 2000s, Williams teamed with T-Power for more commercially slanted drum’n’bass material; their samba-inflected “Shake Ur Body” appeared on Positiva and reached the UK Top Ten. The pair moved to Pete Tong’s FFRR imprint, which released the 2002 album Set It Off. Alongside further pop-leaning work they continued to issue underground jungle records as Ebony Dubsters. In 2005 Williams started Digital Soundboy, home to the second T-Power album Diary of a Digital Soundboy; the label later embraced electro, UK funky house, and dubstep, featuring output from Skream, Benga, Breakage, and Calibre.

He supplied album cuts for Dizzee Rascal in 2007 and 2009, and his remix of Wiley, Naughty Boy, and Emeli Sandé’s 2010 single “Never Be Your Woman” charted in the UK Top Ten. Further activity included a remix of Plan B’s number-three hit “She Said,” the single “Raver” featuring Donae’o, and production on Yasmin’s “Light Up (The World)” with Ms. Dynamite. Two 2013 singles—“Soon Come” with Liam Bailey and “Cloud 9” with Dynamite—also entered the British charts. Another pair of T-Power collaborations, “Feelings” and “Everyday,” surfaced in 2014. The roots-reggae track “Honey” with Kiko Bun arrived in 2016. Subsequent singles “We Just Don’t Care” (featuring Shingai) and “Chocolate” (with Breakage, Roses Gabor, and Ghetts) appeared in 2017, followed by the 2018 reggae-flavored revision of Jorja Smith’s “Let Me Down” featuring Stormzy.

Early in 2018 Williams established the Cult.ure label and began issuing vocal-led drum’n’bass singles such as “Badboy Business” (with Kate Stewart and Mr. Williamz) and “Roll the Dice” (with Lily Allen and Stamina MC), setting the stage for the 2019 project Raggamuffin Soundtape. He rejoined UK Apache for “Original Nuttah 25,” a fresh recording of their 1994 classic. The remix collection Raggamuffin Reloaded and the DJ mix Honey, I Shrunk the Rave, Vol. 1 both emerged in 2020. A 2021 EP, Darker Than Blue, united Williams and Breakage. The Liam Bailey single “Come Around Slowly” and the Voltage collaboration “Amazing” appeared in 2022. In 2023 Williams released “Good Morning” featuring Kojey Radical and Nile Rodgers. The 2024 full-length Rudeboy Design Soundtape, recorded with Mr. Williamz, also included contributions from Ms. Dynamite, Breakage, Double O, and KINGH. The year closed with the single “Risk It All” featuring Maverick Sable.
