Biography
London's Metrik has built his reputation on crisp rolling breaks, anthemic hooks, and raging bass lines that underpin a consistently high-energy cinematic approach to drum'n'bass, a style he has pursued from his 2007 debut through the 2020 album Ex Machina.
Born Tom Mundell and raised in London, the producer first connected with music via the punk rock of the Offspring and Less Than Jake, while also playing in several local grunge and metal bands; a friend's compilation CD then introduced him to drum'n'bass through tracks by Bad Company, Dom & Roland, Teebee, and LTJ Bukem. In 2007 he began releasing under the Metrik name, issuing the bass-heavy, rolling single "Your World" on Intrinsic and following it with two additional singles before aligning with Futurebound and Jaquan's Viper Recordings. Over the ensuing years he delivered several projects on the label, among them The Departure EP and the tracks "Brave New World," "Stranger," and "T 2000."
His evolving sound, now emphasizing anthemic, high-energy technical drum'n'bass, led to a deal with Hospital Records, which released his debut album Universal Language in 2014. Balancing studio work with live commitments, Metrik returned in 2016 with the album LIFE/THRILLS, which featured collaborations with Elizabeth Troy, the Ragga Twins, and Gunship. The following period saw him concentrate on DJ performances at festivals and clubs worldwide, including a year-long Resident slot at BBC Radio 1. In 2020 he completed his third album Ex Machina, previewing it with the singles "Hackers," "Gravity," and "We Are the Energy" ahead of its midyear release.
