Growing up in London, James Pountney, performing as Culture Shock, first encountered drum'n'bass through pirate radio stations during his childhood. That early exposure prompted him to explore electronic music more deeply and begin producing tracks from his home setup. His debut appearance came in 2004 with the Vega EP on Moving Shadow, after which he kept developing material. His next effort arrived in 2007 as The Third Stage, marking his initial release on Ram Records. From that point forward he issued one substantial record annually, most often a single backed with a B-side: "Kronix" b/w "Imax" (2008), "Bad Red" b/w "Surprise" (2010), "Protection" b/w "Ohrwurm" (2011), "I Remember" b/w "Troglodyte" (2012), and "Raindrops" b/w "Troglodyte VIP" (2014). During the intervening years he also collaborated with longtime associate Sub Focus on "Move Higher" (2009) and "You Make It Better" (2013). In 2015 he unveiled "City Lights," which featured vocals from singer Bryn Christopher. Already regarded as something of a classic within EDM circles, the track had circulated in various forms for nearly five years, and its official launch generated considerable excitement among drum'n'bass and jungle listeners. Capitalizing on that momentum, Culture Shock delivered his third EP, Transit, toward the end of 2015.
