Evoking the rowdy energy of a premium honky-tonk outfit blazing through cherished numbers with reckless drive right before closing time, Banditos blend an array of elements often grouped under roots music—blues and country drawn from multiple eras, garage-tinged rock & roll, soul, and gospel, among others—along with substantial helpings of hard rock and psychedelia, delivering a solid slab of gritty yet inviting roadhouse propulsion. The ensemble’s broad array of influences does not dilute the cohesion of their strongest material; instead, the musicians merge disparate approaches seamlessly, an asset fully realized on their opening pair of albums, 2015’s Banditos and 2017’s Visionland. Their 2022 release Right On incorporated additional ingredients, most notably 1960s R&B and pop, while elevating vocalist Mary Beth Richardson to greater prominence in the arrangements.

Banditos originated in Birmingham, Alabama, as the vision of Corey Parsons on guitar and vocals alongside Stephen Pierce on banjo and vocals, two musicians already acquainted through the city’s punk and indie rock community. Their tastes spanned widely, prompting the pair to combine country and blues interests while busking on the streets, an activity that generated sufficient notice to secure an invitation for a performance at one of their preferred local saloons. Realizing a full band would suit the occasion, they enlisted three acquaintances: guitarist Jeffrey David Salter and drummer Randy Taylor Wade, both engaged in jazz and classical studies, plus vocalist Mary Beth Richardson, whose background consisted of church singing. Audience response proved strong, and with the subsequent addition of bassist Jeffrey “Danny” Vines the Banditos roster was set.

The group quickly established a local reputation across Alabama before embarking on extensive regional travel throughout the South, accepting bookings wherever they could secure them. Frequent appearances in Nashville, Tennessee prompted a move to Music City, though the new base proved largely nominal given that the band logged more than 600 concerts over three years. A 2014 slot at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas, drew attention from Bloodshot Records, an “insurgent country” imprint whose representatives were sufficiently impressed to offer a recording contract. The self-titled debut appeared in May 2015, after which the band resumed heavy touring before pausing in Dripping Springs, Texas, to track the follow-up, Visionland, issued in 2017.

Following further road work and the exit of bassist Jeffrey “Danny” Vines, Banditos entered the studio with producer Jordan Lehning—also contributing bass and keyboards—for a third album. Three years elapsed before the project emerged, as the COVID-19 pandemic halted touring plans and the musicians chose to delay release until live promotion became feasible. During the interim, Bloodshot Records encountered internal difficulties that forced the label’s closure in October 2021. Once performance opportunities resumed, Banditos aligned with the independent imprint eggHUNT Records, issuing Right On in May 2022. The album adopted a more refined sound that integrated 1960s pop and soul textures through expanded keyboard and horn arrangements, while positioning Mary Beth Richardson’s vocals more centrally rather than sharing the spotlight with Parsons and Pierce.
