Brought together through their mutual admiration for the Legendary Pink Dots, the Dutch duo Beequeen formed in the late '80s around vocalist and instrumentalist Freek Kinkelaar and laptop artist Frans de Waard. Their shared interest in abrasive yet thoughtful sounds aligned with the rising industrial pop movement. Known for razor-sharp wit and a modest self-identity, the pair produced work that resisted easy classification once completed. The name Beequeen paid tribute to one of their favorite visual artists, yet early performances often attracted mismatched audiences after venues mistakenly listed the act as "Be Queen" on marquees. A disappointing concert prompted them to pursue even more unconventional directions, resulting in a steady stream of underground tapes, records, and CDs over the ensuing years. While most of these releases circulated only among a limited local audience, the group's reputation expanded gradually, prompting collectors to pay steep sums for homemade cassettes. Persistent experimentation led the members to establish Plinkity Plonk Records, through which they also issued their individual projects. Periodic breaks that let Kinkelaar and de Waard pursue separate paths helped sustain Beequeen across decades, yielding Ownliness via an independent distributor in summer 2002 and subsequent albums including Gund (2003), The Bodyshop (2005), and Sandancing (2008). The final release incorporated vocalist Olga Wallis, who joined the lineup in 2007 and shifted Beequeen from a duo to a trio.
