Belinda Emmett harbored an ambition common among Australian women of her generation: to mirror Kylie Minogue by converting an early television soap career into pop stardom. That trajectory ended abruptly when the breast cancer for which she had already received treatment returned, claiming her life in 2006.

While still a teenager she fronted the band Big Baby Jam, yet acting soon took precedence; her first screen role arrived in 1994 on the sitcom Hey Dad..!. From that production she transitioned directly to the soap Home and Away, which shared the same studio facilities. Shortly afterward she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery together with radiotherapy to remove a malignant tumor.

After meeting television presenter Rove McManus in 1999, the pair later married, and Emmett began composing material for a projected album, several songs drawing explicitly on their relationship. Those plans shifted when, during the 2001 shoot of The Nugget with Eric Bana, physicians informed her that the disease had metastasized to her bones. She continued to lay down tracks intermittently over the ensuing years while managing the advancing illness.

Emmett passed away in hospital at the age of 32 in 2006. Her album So I Am appeared posthumously the following year. Though released under painful circumstances, the record remained consistently uplifting and reflected the optimistic outlook she maintained toward every part of her life. It entered the Australian charts at number ten.
