Born Benjamin Myers on 16 April 1968 in Jamaica, West Indies, Myaz had already spent years working behind the scenes in the island’s music business before launching a singing career. His reputation rested on bass guitar skills together with songwriting and production credits. He first attracted notice as a Jamaican lovers rock vocalist in 1995 with the release of “Love You Higher.” The track’s popularity earned it a CD single issue, an honor then reserved for recordings judged capable of crossing into mainstream markets. Myaz sustained visibility with the upbeat “Shine On,” a track that captured an optimistic spirit. That momentum secured him an invitation to perform at MIDEM 97 in France, where he represented Jamaica to strong effect. After the event he began work on his debut album, Intimate Relationship. The set included the hit “Love You Higher,” a rendition of “Don’t Ask My Neighbors,” the engaging “Show Your Love,” and the passionate title song. Critics praised the collection, whose appeal was further strengthened by duet appearances with Junior Jazz and Freddie McGregor. Myaz toured Japan in support of the album alongside McGregor and Yeshemabeth, McGregor’s daughter, backed by the inventive Gumption Band. While there he also promoted his next project, Time Together, a blend of varied musical approaches. The record found favor among his Japanese audience yet failed to generate comparable interest back home. Issued by twenty four seven, it contained “Intimate Relationship” as a bonus track.
