Mikey Spice first saw the light of day in Kingston, Jamaica, during 1965 and started performing vocally inside his father’s church when he reached seven. By the time he turned thirteen he had already mastered an array of instruments that included guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, piano, saxophone, flute, harp and clarinet. Seven years after that milestone he chose to pursue a career in reggae. Following stints alongside various groups, the singer—whose timbre has often been likened to Lou Rawls—entered the studio for the first time in 1991. His well-received appearance at Reggae Sunsplash in 1993 led directly to a debut release on Ras Records, the album Happiness issued in 1995; the follow-up, Born Again, arrived the subsequent year. Jah Lifted Me surfaced in 1997, while Harder Than Before reached stores in early 2001.
