The noise pop outfit Beverly fuses the bright strains of 1980s indie pop, as heard from Shop Assistants, with the punchy edge of 1990s alternative acts like the Breeders, yielding an infectious and upbeat sound perfectly suited to the current decade. The project originated on Frankie Rose’s late-2013 tour, where the indie icon handled drums and vocals alongside vocalist and guitarist Drew Citron. Citron, previously a member of the indie pop band Avan Lava, contributed keyboards and guitar to Rose’s live setup; shared musical affinities soon prompted the pair to launch a separate endeavor, with Citron assuming primary songwriting duties. Their earliest release came via Kanine Records’ 2014 Record Store Day anthology Non Violent Femmes, which included the track “Honey Do.” Later that July the label issued the group’s debut full-length, Careers. Following its arrival Rose departed to concentrate on solo material, leaving Citron to recruit bassist Scott Rosenthal, known for work with Crystal Stilts and the Beets, and drummer Jamie Ingalls. The 2015 single “Crooked Cop” previewed the subsequent album, whose ten tracks were written, performed, and produced solely by Citron and Rosenthal. The collection incorporated ethereal, Twin Peaks-inspired ballads alongside a gentler overall sensibility, and Kanine brought it out in May 2016 as The Blue Swell.
