Biography
Led by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Candace Lazarou, Body Double probe questions of authenticity and identity through shape-shifting post-punk that maintains a steady level of intensity. The Oakland, California group channels the legacies of Wire, Berlin-era Bowie, and Tones on Tail on its 2020 debut album, Milk Fed, where tracks weave together passion and detachment in ways that reflect the unsettled era of their creation.
As the daughter of a Marine, Lazarou relocated repeatedly across countries throughout her childhood and teenage years, an experience of displacement that eventually drew her toward Oakland, California's underground art and music communities. During the early 2010s she performed with the post-punk group Pang, which issued several singles before its dissolution. She then formed the noise-rock band Mansion, responsible for a self-titled 2014 EP and the 2015 full-length Early Life; the project ended in 2016, just before the Ghost Ship fire struck the Bay Area's counterculture.
Seeking renewal, Lazarou focused on sobriety and refining her songwriting. In 2017 she began tracking what became Body Double's debut album alongside co-producer Jason Kick, handling nearly all instruments aside from drums, which were supplied by former Mansion drummer Jeff Cook and Silver Shadows' Chase Kamp. She later linked up with bassist Noah Adams, expanding the lineup to feature Kamp, guitarist Jascha Ephraim, and keyboardist Mel Weikart. Following initial live performances in 2019, the band issued Milk Fed in September 2020 through Zum Records.
