Growing up as the cousin of Jim Seals from Seals & Crofts and Dan Seals from England Dan & John Ford Coley, and as nephew to Nashville legend Troy Seals, Brady Seals entered a household steeped in music from the start. Piano and songwriting came into his life at age nine, while performances with a high-school band followed at sixteen. He left home shortly afterward, returned long enough to finish his schooling, then departed once more and found his way to Nashville, where Del Gray recruited him for Little Texas.

Keyboards and co-writing credits occupied the next six years, during which Seals contributed to every major hit the band released. His exit from the group came in 1995, spurred by mentor Rodney Crowell to launch a solo career. Reprise offered a recording deal, resulting in the 1996 arrival of his debut album, The Truth. Production assistance from Troy and songwriting input from cousin T.J. made the project a family affair.
