Biography
Jeff Carson ranked among the fresh country vocalists who leveraged the genre’s broad commercial surge in the early 1990s into major success via his self-titled debut album. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he grew up in Gravette, Arkansas, where he performed in church and learned harmonica and guitar during childhood. While still in high school he assembled an impromptu group with classmates that performed the Eagles’ “Seven Bridges Road” at a school talent show; the ensemble earned second place and prompted Carson to commit to a music career. After graduation he entered a talent contest at the Ozark Mountain Music complex in Rogers, Arkansas. Although he placed outside the top spot, the winner recruited him for the house band, and Carson remained with that ensemble for the next four years until it dissolved. He then relocated to Branson, Missouri, where he played bass in area groups and began composing original material. There he met Kim Cooper, whom he married; she urged him to try Nashville. Because a friend of hers performed with the Opryland Hotel act Texana, which required a bassist, Carson moved to Music City in 1989. He eventually persuaded the hotel to feature him as a solo performer. Around that period he also secured a songwriting contract with Little Big Town Music and recorded demos for multiple labels. Publisher and producer Chuck Howard discovered Carson’s original songs and offered him a publishing and development agreement. By 1994 Carson had signed with Curb Records. His debut album, Jeff Carson, appeared in early 1995; although the lead single “Yeah Buddy” failed to chart, the follow-up “Not on Your Love” climbed to number one. The Top Ten single “The Car” came next. His second album, Butterfly Kisses, arrived in 1997, followed by Real Life in 2001. Both projects reached the Top 40 on the Country albums chart, while the track “Real Life (I Never Was the Same Again)” peaked at number 14 on the Country singles chart, marking Carson’s final major hit. In 2009 he stepped away from music to serve as a police officer in Franklin, Tennessee, yet he still released two songs online in 2012. Jeff Carson died in Franklin on March 26, 2002, after suffering a heart attack at the age of 58.
