Originating in Dale City, VA, outside Washington, D.C., Brave formed as a progressive rock/metal outfit in 1996 when siblings Michelle on vocals and keyboards and Scott Loose on guitar and keyboards joined forces with their longtime acquaintance Trevor Schrotz on drums. The initial lineup, then operating under the name Arise from Thorns, issued two independent goth rock albums before incorporating metal and art rock elements that prompted a full transition to Brave. For the 2002 release Searching for the Sun on Dark Symphonies Records, the group expanded with second guitarist Juan Sumarriba, bassist Chris Welborn, and violinist Suvo Sur. Subsequent years brought an intensified round of regional shows that included support slots for Opeth, Savatage, Lacuna Coil, and Asia, followed by the 2004 EP Passages. Four years passed before the arrival of Monuments, at which point the core of the Loose siblings, Schrotz, and Sur welcomed guitarist Matt Kozar and bassist Ben Kelly into the fold. Across Brave’s entire run, Scott Loose has simultaneously contributed to the doom band While Heaven Wept.
