Buscemi emerged as a distinctive presence among trip-hop acts through an appealing fusion of grounded breakbeats, vintage house, and jazz-funk elements. Belgian producer Dirk Swartenbroeckx, who chose the project name in reference to the American actor celebrated for Fargo and Reservoir Dogs, introduced Buscemi in 1997 via the Plus Belle Africaine EP, which received exposure on Kiss FM via Gilles Peterson’s program. The next year saw the arrival of the first full-length effort, Mocha Supremo, followed in mid-2000 by Our Girl in Havana. Camino Real appeared in 2003 and featured vocal contributions from Michael Franti alongside Isabelle Antena. Antena contributed again to the 2006 album Retro Nuevo.
