Bye Beneco emerged from South Africa with a sound that blended tuneful pop, neon-tinted dance grooves, and luminous dream-pop textures. Their first full-length effort, the partly acoustic Space Elephant, appeared in 2014. Two years later the Johannesburg quartet shifted toward disco and new-wave influences on the 2017 EP Ghetto Disko, then leaned further into synthesizer-driven, dancefloor material laced with psychedelic touches on the 2022 EP Leaving All the Time.

The group first assembled in Johannesburg in 2012. By the release of a three-song demo the following year, the lineup comprised vocalists Lenny-Dee Doucha and Jenny Dison, guitarist and bassist Dan Knight, and drummer Bergen Nielson. That same year they made their festival debut at South Africa’s Oppikoppi, showcasing an eclectic palette while finishing work on their debut album. After guitarist Matthew Watson joined, Space Elephant arrived on Just Music in June 2014. The band soon supported Ben Howard and the Allah-Lahs on tour; Knight’s intermittent presence continued until Jenny Dison departed ahead of the 2017 Ghetto Disko EP, also issued by Just Music. The dance-leaning release sustained the group’s profile on the indie festival circuit. Individual tracks from their next EP began surfacing in 2019, and in 2020—during a European tour—the band relocated its operations to Berlin.

Core members Doucha and Nielson had married by the time the eight-song Leaving All the Time appeared as a self-released set in October 2022.
